How many products do you use before you go to bed? 5? 10? Or is it a quick cleanse before you head straight to sleep?
Either way, there’s a high chance you’re missing out a vital step: toner.
It’s one third of the age-old skin care routine we all started off learning (cleanse, tone & moisturize). But now there are so many exfoliators, serums and essences to add to your routine, it seems we’ve forgotten all about the humble toner.
But toning is such an important part of our skin care routine, and we’re here to remind you why toning is an important part of your routine, and why we need to bring it back.
1. Gets rid of every last bit of makeup
Even though you may think your cleanser has picked up every last bit of dirt, sometimes it just doesn't. Toning is there to remove the excess dirt, impurities and makeup that your cleanser may have missed. It also helps remove any cleanser left over, because leaving it on can irritate your skin.
2. Removes all excess oil
The toner's most important role is to get rid of any oil, which is what clogs your pores and causes things like blackheads and whiteheads. If you have acne prone or oily skin, then look for a toner with glycolic acid or salicylic acid, as these will help balance oil and shine.
3. Evens out the PH balance of your skin
Originally, this is what toners were designed to do. Cleansers often cause our skin’s PH to be thrown off a little (optimal PH is 5.5), so using a toner will reset this. It’ll stop your skin from feeling too oily or too dry after you wash your face, and you'll be left glowing, cleansed and refreshed.
4. Tightens up your pores
The look of large pores is the least of your worries. Having large ones means that it’s easier for dirt and bacteria to get inside, which causes blackheads, zits and infected cysts. So using toner will tighten your pores and prevent all sorts of skin problems, protecting it against future damage.
If you suffer from dry skin, using a hydrating toner will really help. And even if you have oily skin, a hydrating toner will give your skin the moisture it needs without feeling to greasy.
So, if this hasn’t persuaded you to start using a toner as part of your skin care routine, nothing will! Apart from the ability to prevent breakouts and keep your skin glowing, toners also prep your skin for the next product you’re about to use. So toning also means those serums and moisturizers will be even more effective when you use them! Win-Win!
